porcelain vases and flowered tea- sets. At the door of the stall a young lady was talking and laughing with two young gentlemen. I remarked their English accents and listened vaguely to their conversation.
"O, I never said such a thing!"
"O, but you did!"
"O, but I didn't!"
"Didn't she say that?"
"Yes. I heard her."
"0, there's a ... fib!"
내가 왜 왔는지를 어렵게 기억하면서 나는 상점 한 곳을 둘러보러 갔다. 그리고 사기로 만든 꽃병을 과 꽃무니 찻잔 세트를 살펴보았다. 상점의 문쪽에는 젊은 숙녀가 두명의 어린 신사들과 말하고 웃고 있었다. 나는 그들의 영국식 억양을 인지했고 멍하게 그들의 대화를 듣고 있었다.
“ 아이, 나는 결코 그렇게 말한 적 없는데 “
“ 아, 그렇게 했어 ”
” 아이 아니에요 정말 ”
” 그녀가 그렇게 말하지 않았나? ”
” 맞아 나도 들었는데 ”
” 아이 이런....거짓말 ”
Observing me the young lady came over and asked me did I wish to buy anything. The tone of her voice was not encouraging; she seemed to have spoken to me out of a sense of duty. I looked humbly at the great jars that stood like eastern guards at either side of the dark entrance to the stall and murmured:
"No, thank you."
관찰하고 있는 나에게 젊은 여자가 다가와 내가 무엇을 사고 싶은지 물었다. 그녀의 목소리는 판매를 하려는 어조가 아니었다. 그녀는 나에게 일종의 의무감에서 말하는 것 같아 보였다. 나는 판매대의 어두운 입구 양쪽에 동방의 보초처럼 서있는 거대한 항아리들을 초라하게 쳐다보고는 중얼거렸다.
” 아니요 됐어요 ”
The young lady changed the position of one of the vases and went back to the two young men. They began to talk of the same subject. Once or twice the young lady glanced at me over her shoulder.
젊은 여자는 꽃병 하나의 위치를 바꾸고는 두명의 남자에게로 돌아왔다. 그들은 같은 얘기를 다시 하기 시작했다. 한번 두 번 그 여자는 나를 어깨너머로 힐끔힐끔 쳐다보았다.
I lingered before her stall, though I knew my stay was useless, to make my interest in her wares seem the more real. Then I turned away slowly and walked down the middle of the bazaar. I allowed the two pennies to fall against the sixpence in my pocket. I heard a voice call from one end of the gallery that the light was out. The upper part of the hall was now completely dark.
더 머물러봤자 소용없다는 것을 알았지만 나는 그녀의 물건을 정말로 살 생각이 있었던 것처럼 보이게 하려고 그녀의 노점 앞에 계속 우물쭈물 머물러 있었다. 그런 다음 천천히 몸을 돌려 바자회 가운데로 걸어 나왔다. 나는 호주머니 속에서 두개의 페니를 6펜스 동전 위에 떨어뜨렸다. 나는 회랑의 한쪽 끝에서 불을 끈다는 목소리를 들었다. 홀의 위쪽 부분은 이제 완전히 어두워졌다.
Gazing up into the darkness I saw myself as a creature driven and derided by vanity; and my eyes burned with anguish and anger.
