more important than doctrines. His patron saint was the thief on the cross, for he did not have to know any theology to enter into paradise. (d) He stressed the inward character of Christianity, over against theology and structures. But while he severely criticized formal church ceremonies and practices, he would not reject the unity and authority of the Church. (e) He pled for caution and tolerance in an age of intolerance, and believed in learning and education as the best means of achieving reform. (f) He corresponded with and influenced many of the leading reformers and in the early years tended to support Martin Luther, but in 1524 he turned against Luther's doctrine of the bondage of the human will. He had a basic difference in outlook. Erasmus was a humanist. The Renaissance and the Reformation were not emphasizing the same thing. The humanists would have reformed the symptoms, but would not have gotten to the heart of the problem.
5) 위대한 프랑스 기독교 인문주의자는 Jacques Lefevre d'Etaples (or, Stapulensis, c. 1455-1536)였다. Guillaume Briconnet, the Bishop of Meaux, and the Greek scholar, Guillaume Bude; 개신교에서는 Louis de Berquin a Protestant martyr, and Guillaume Farel, the fiery reformer of French-speaking Switzerland.
The Christian humanists generally agreed that the path of reform led through sound learning, preaching against immorality and glaring administrative abuses. They exposed corruption and other evils in the Church. They discredited scholastic theology. To a large degree they looked on life from another standpoint than that of medieval traditionalism. They led people to study the Scriptures again. They provided the tools for understanding the sources of Christianity, and they brought in new and more natural methods of exegesis. But, to preserve the solidarity of the Christian community, most of them who survived refused to follow the Protestant leaders in their separation from the Catholic Church. They prepared the way for others, but they would have no part in dividing the Christian Church. Still, without them, the way would not have been prepared for Luther, and Zwingli, and Calvin.
